quote:
"Surf pop from New York isn't nearly as surprising as the fact that synth-pop this good can come from outside Gothenburg, on The Drum's unofficial debut EP. This might be a bootleg but the quality of production and songwriting only confirms further in my mind that this is 2009's best kept secret. Every song on here as such a strong identity that is unique to this group, yet has that ability to tap into our unfazed love of Cure singles, early Beach Boys classics, and Sweden's recent recruit of guitar-and-synth based pop groups. "Best Friend" starts the EP with a sleepy guitar line that cascades into a Summer-worthy chorus complimented by some very Embassy-like use of samples. "Down by the Water" and "I'll Never Drop My Sword" solidify the Beach Boys love between this duo, and they really add something special to these obvious odes to 50's jukebox pop. Every song on here really explodes with it's own unique sound that compliments everything else on the brief EP. The way "Let's Go Surfing" breaksdown, the addictive chorus of "I Felt Stupid", and the end of "Submarine" that makes it so welcoming to start it all over again are going to be some of 2009's best moments. It's going to be hard to remember that these guys aren't from Sweden, but there won't be any difficulty in remembering that they are here with one of the year's most original releases."
